Burmester blows away Tenerife Open rivals with closing 62

South Africa’s Dean Burmester won the European Tour’s Tenerife Open by five shots after shooting a superb nine-under-par 62 on the final day at Costa Adeje.

The 31-year-old from Bloemfontein, began the last day one shot back from joint third round leaders Kalle Samooja and Nicolai von Dellingshausen, with 18 players within five strokes of the lead.

Playing alongside Samooja and von Dellingshausen, Burmester laid down the gauntlet early on with five birdies in the opening seven holes, which contributed to a five-under front nine of 30 for a one-shot lead as the final group reached the turn.

The seven-time Sunshine Tour winner never let up all day and birdies 1t 11, 13, 15 and another at the last all added up to a error-free 62 that took him to 25 under. It was Burmester’s first ever victory outside of the African continent, following his win at the Tshwane Open in 2017. The €230,000 first prize moves him up to 18th in the Race to Dubai ranking.

Von Dellingshausen holed a nerveless eagle putt at the final hole to claim the best finish of his European Tour career, outright runner-up on 20 under par, while Samooja and Poland’s Adrian Meronk shared third place on 19 under. Last month’s Austrian Open winner John Catlin finished one shot back in fifth.
