Klopp ahead of Guardiola in terms of achievements in England – Collymore

Post by Floyd »

Former Liverpool star Stan Collymore has recently voiced his opinion that Jurgen Klopp has achieved more in England than Pep Guardiola. Guardiola’s Man City stint Pep Guardiola took the reins at Manchester City ahead of the 2016/17 campaign. The Spaniard’s debut season in England was somewhat mediocre by his standards. However, the campaigns since have seen the Sky Blues completely dominate the English game. Man City would win the 2017/18 title with a staggering 100 points, the highest total amassed by any side in a single Premier League season. City would also win the League Cup that term. The following season, meanwhile, the Sky Blues maintained their league crown, this time amassing 98 points – the second-highest points total in Premier League history. Guardiola and co. also added another League Cup and FA Cup to their ever-growing silverware collection – making City the first male English side to win the domestic treble. However, the Citizens have already won yet another League Cup, and are into the last eight of the FA Cup. Yet, despite all of this, Stan Collymore believes that Jurgen Klopp is ahead of Pep Guardiola in terms of what he has achieved in England. Klopp took the reins at Anfield almost a year prior to Guardiola joining City, with the German yet to win any domestic silverware with Liverpool. Granted, Klopp has clinched a Champions League trophy, but other than that, the former Dortmund boss currently has no major titles to his name at Liverpool. Despite this, though, writing for the Mirror, Collymore recently revealed his opinion that Klopp is ‘ahead of Guardiola’, based on what the pair have achieved in England: “If Jurgen Klopp carries on like this he will go down as one of the all-time great managers – not just at Liverpool but in English football history. “His buying and building of a team, his management of his players, his demeanour and his achievements are first class. “And if he can back up last season’s European Cup win, and this season’s Super Cup, Club World Cup and Premier League triumphs with two or three more titles, maybe another Champions League and a domestic cup or two, then he will quite rightly be talked about in the same breath as Sir Alex Ferguson, Bill Shankly, Brian Clough, Bob Paisley, Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola. “In terms of what he has achieved in England, I’d even put Klopp ahead of Guardiola now. Manchester City were already four, five or six years into a project when Guardiola arrived at the Etihad, whereas Klopp pretty much had a standing start at Anfield by comparison.”
