‘He was hungry’ – Chelsea boss Lampard heaps praise on Christian Pulisic following Aston Villa win

Post by Floyd »

Frank Lampard has this evening moved to lavish praise on Christian Pulisic, following the youngster’s goalscoring introduction off the bench versus Aston Villa. Chelsea down Villa The Blues made the trip to Villa Park earlier today, for their first outing following the resumption of top-flight football in England. Lampard’s men entered proceedings sitting 4th in the Premier League table, and having been boosted by the 1-1 stalemate between Tottenham and Manchester United on Friday night. This result meant that Chelsea were aware ahead of kick-off that a victory would see them move 5 points clear of the latter in the race for a Champions League berth. And, when all was said and done, secure a key victory was exactly what the capital giants managed. A hard-fought affair in Birmingham saw the visitors fight back from a goal down, to eventually emerge with a 2-1 win. Kortney Hause gave Dean Smith’s hosts a shock lead just before the interval, when a momentary lapse at the back from Chelsea allowed a number of Villa’s players to slip in behind, to open the scoring against the run of play. The Pensioners, though, soon fought back, with a 3-minute blitz just past the hour-mark having, in the end, proven the difference between the sides. First, Christian Pulisic pulled Chelsea level, arriving at the back post to slot Cesar Azpilicueta’s superb delivery in off the underside of the crossbar. And before Villa had time to settle, the away side made it two, when Olivier Giroud’s effort on the swivel took a huge deflection, leaving the wrong-footed Orjn Nyland with no chance. ‘A big thing’ As outlined above, setting Chelsea’s comeback in motion at Villa Park was the contribution of Christian Pulisic. The United States international, who had not featured in a competitive fixture since January, was introduced off the bench early in the second-half, in place of Ruben Loftus-Cheek. And it certainly didn’t take long for the 21-year-old to make his presence felt, with Pulisic’s perfectly timed run and composed finish having come within 5 minutes of Frank Lampard opting to make use of his talents. As previously alluded to, meanwhile, the Chelsea boss has since been full of praise for his side’s talented young wide-man. Speaking in his post-match press conference this evening, Lampard was drawn on Pulisic’s immediate impact versus Villa, with the former English international having first explained: ‘He was hungry, I know that and I felt for him.’ Lampard then went on to reveal why he feels the American’s latest strike showcases the fact that Pulisic is well on his way to becoming a ‘top class player’: ‘He has trained well. The ability to arrive in the box is a big thing. It is a difference between being a very good player on the flank and a top class player.’ Lampard on Pulisic: “He was hungry, I know that and I felt for him.” “He has trained well. The ability to arrive in the box is a big thing. It is a difference between being a very good player on the flank and a top class player.” #CFC #AVLCHE — Nizaar Kinsella (@NizaarKinsella) June 21, 2020
