‘Angry’ Sergio Romero reportedly eyeing Man United contract termination

Post by Floyd »

The latest word stemming from the English media this weekend suggests that Sergio Romero is ready to terminate his contract with Manchester United, to secure an early exit from the club. Reds’ goalkeeping situation Argentine international Romero of course acted as the backup to David de Gea at Old Trafford for the last 5 seasons. During this time, the 33-year-old went on to establish himself as, in the eyes of many, the most reliable no.2 in the English top-flight. Romero’s future, however, was thrown up in the air this past summer. After Dean Henderson’s loan stint with Sheffield United came to an end, the highly-regarded shot-stopper returned to Manchester, to battle it out with David de Gea for starting duties. The widespread assumption was therefore that Romero would be on the move, to secure regular football ahead of next summer’s Copa America. Everton, meanwhile, were one of a host of sides tipped as a potential landing spot for the Argentine. Upon the transfer deadline passing three weeks ago, however, Romero remained on United’s books, a situation with which the shot-stopper’s wife made her frustrations crystal clear. And Romero’s woes have since only deepened. After first being omitted from the club’s Champions League squad for the season ahead, the veteran was also passed up on by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for the Premier League, with Lee Grant instead set to act as 3rd-choice between the posts at Old Trafford. It was subsequently revealed, meanwhile, that Romero became aware of the club’s decision not through personal contact, but via social media: Sergio Romero has been treated pretty poorly by Man United. Not told he was surplus to requirements in the summer, then priced out of a move when he asked to go and was left to find out on social media he had been omitted from CL and PL squads. As per a report from Jeremy Cross of the Daily Star, Romero is ready for showdown talks with the Red Devils hierarchy. The South American is currently in self-isolation in Manchester, following his return from Argentina. However, over the week ahead, he is expected to call for a meeting with both Solskjaer and Ed Woodward, during which Romero will request for his contract to be terminated. This will come ‘in return for him agreeing to terminate the remainder of his £100,000-a-week deal.’ Highlights: Williams stars & Pellistri debuts as Man United U23s down Everton Luke Shaw joins Man United boss Solskjaer in heaping praise on Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy
